One Small Charity, One Great Award

Clare Hanbury FRSA is the founder and CEO of Children for Health, a small charity based in Cambridge dedicated to the promotion of health education in developing countries, focused on developing children as agents of change and communicators of essential health messages in their families and communities.

In September this year, Clare and Children for Health won the Small Charity, Big Achiever category of the Third Sector Awards, sponsored by MCM Net. Managing Director Deon Kloppers said: “We specifically chose this award because it resonates with our own beliefs; size really does not matter, if you believe in what you are doing and are passionate about helping, a small number of people can make a profound difference.”

Accepting the award, Clare said: “I am honoured and humbled we won this award. I’m lucky to have spent much of my working life doing work that I love and it is more than I hoped for that our charity has received this recognition.”

In the past few years, Clare has travelled to Mozambique, Nigeria, India and Pakistan developing materials and conducting teacher training in both rural and urban locations. But her impact goes well beyond her teacher training courses:

The Children for Health 100 are 10 health messages for children to learn and share in 10 health topics. Each one is created for 10-14 year olds to learn and share. These are designed to be delivered by mobile phone and are ubiquitous in the communities where Children for Health is active. In addition the charity produces posters, storybooks and a wealth of other learning tools that are freely available on the Children for Health website.
