The Inclusive Growth Commission hosted a roundtable at the Conservative party conference. It was led by our Chair, Stephanie Flanders and we were joined by senior MPs, commission members, city leaders, business representatives, policy makers and other influencers.
We considered how city leaders can:
- capitalise on the opportunity to put place-based governance at the heart of our policy, finance and accountability framework
- manage the risks and uncertainties over the next two years of Brexit negotiations and into 2020, by which time local government has asked to be self-financing
- provide the basis for long term revitalisation of inclusive, dynamic and resilient local economies where investment in social infrastructure is integral to widespread prosperity and growth.
The Inclusive Growth Commission is an independent inquiry designed to understand and identify practical ways to make local economies across the UK more economically inclusive and prosperous. To this end it is undertaking a yearlong programme to identify practical ways for cities to rebuild our economy, reconnect our politics and renew our communities’ sense of value, identity, purpose and belonging. The Inclusive Growth Commission is kindly supported by Core Cities, London Councils, Key Cities, Joseph Roundtree Foundation, Local Government Association and PwC.
The Commission published its interim report immediately prior to the conference season and this event will be extremely helpful in advancing the analysis and propositions underpinning that thinking in support of the final report, due early in 2017.
