RSA Watch Edinburgh: Food, Farming and Countryside Commission

Join us for the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission’s RSA Watch event held in Edinburgh.

The RSA’s Food, Farming and Countryside Commission is an ambitious two-year programme, launching in November 2017.

Against a backdrop of change and uncertainty, this Commission is intended to help secure the future of safe, sustainable food and farming systems in the UK and to protect national environmental assets of vital economic, social and cultural importance, for now and for future generations.

Scotland has a strong vision for the future of its food and agricultural sector, marking it as a key priority area for growth. 52 per cent of the UK’s fish is landed in four Scottish ports and over 80 per cent of Scotland’s land is dedicated to agriculture.

But with 9 per cent of Scottish wildlife under the threat of extinction, what role does the sector have in the management of the countryside? Agriculture, fisheries and environment policies were all devolved to the Scottish parliament in 1998 but in practice have been controlled by the EU since 1973. With Brexit on the horizon, what will replace the Common Agricultural Policy?

What changes will we need to see to ensure Scotland’s nature, countryside and communities thrive alongside one another? Over two thirds of Scottish adults are overweight or obese, so how can we explore the connections between access to the countryside, the food we consume and our health? The Food, Farming and Countryside Commission will add further value to these debates and explore the broader issues within the Scottish context.

Join the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission for an RSA Watch event as we seek to explore what these issues mean for Scotland. In this special event we will kick off with filmed highlights from the Commission’s launch debate, and will go on to discuss the key ideas and issues with local thinkers and doers. The event will be hosted by Sue Pritchard, Director of the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission.
