Panel Discussion - Sustaining the gig economy
Companies like Uber, Lyft, Handy and Postmates have come to define the so-called gig-economy, also known as the on-demand economy and the platform economy. These companies deliver individually tailored services that meet the specific needs of people at the push of a button, and they are changing the way we relate to everything from owning a car to delivering a package across town. But beyond providing new benefits to consumers, these companies have also created an entirely new way to work. Legions of independent contractors are the men and women powering these new platforms, raising important questions about flexible work patterns and their impact on healthcare, savings, family, retirement and quality of life.
This panel will examine the sustainability of this new economy with a particular focus on workers. How can we ensure that the gig economy benefits both consumers and workers into the future?
