RSA Perth Network: Rethinking Engagement--‘Seeing Things Differently’ at The Art Gallery of Western Australia

 Art galleries and museums have traditionally been presenting works of art "from the top down". This assumes that engagement with such works must be guided by the "pearls of wisdom" delivered by directors, curators and educators through their displays, labels, panels, and guided tours. The result is that a gap has been created between institutions and their audiences in terms of perception about the former's role in society as well as mutual expectations.

 This issue is particularly apparent in Perth, where the traditional audience that has historically been content with the status quo is now being replaced by new generations and, especially, by new needs and demands that go hand in hand with the changing fabric of the city's social structure and complexity.

 Dr Stefano Carboni, Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, will address this issue and other related topics in this lively and thought-provoking Q&A session.

 Over the next 5 to 10 years it is estimated that 40% of companies on the Standard & Poor’s index will be disrupted by rapidly advancing technologies and entrepreneurs adapting quickly to the new industrial environment. A recent report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch predicts that robots will be performing almost half of manufacturing tasks in a decade and doing everything from providing investment advice to performing medical surgery. It also predicts that the rise of robots and artificial intelligence (AI) will see an estimated 47% of US jobs potentially automated by 2020.

 Over history, machines have taken away jobs, but many argue we are now facing a paradigm shift, which will change the way we live and work. Greater than any luddite could imagine, there is growing anxiety about AI. As the legendary astrophysicist Stephen Hawking warned, the unfettered development of artificial intelligence “could spell the end of the human race”. Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk echoed his thoughts, saying that AI is “potentially more dangerous than nukes."
