Fellow-led poetry competition on the theme of Palestine

The 2017 poetry competition entitled ‘Palestine’ has been created this year by Fellows of the RSA and RSL to mark the centenary of the Balfour Project in November.

In his most recent paper for The Conservative Middle East Council, former Consul-General to Jerusalem Sir Vincent Fean argues for the British Government to recognize the state of Palestine on 1967 lines alongside the state of Israel:

‘There are no foreign embassies in Jerusalem, East or West and no country recognizes the legitimacy of Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem, or the legality of the settlements.’ 

The Balfour Declaration in 1917 states ‘It being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.’

The competition seeks a winning poem encapsulating the complex networks of intellectual and physical space this situation creates. Palestine has ceased to exist on maps.

The competition is non-political, non-partisan, and open to the national and international community of students of all faiths. A £500 prize will be awarded to the poem that reconciles this emotional and physical and intellectual space.
