The RSA's Chief Executive, Andy Haldane argues that there is cause to be optimistic about levelling-up in general, and levelling-up Liverpool in particular.
‘How can we create a more successful Liverpool?' was the question posed at the 2023 Vice-Chancellor's Conference at Liverpool University. RSA CEO Andy Haldane gave the keynote address, to encourage a realistic but confident discussion about the many opportunities and challenges faced by Liverpool and other UK cities.
Yes, there have been examples of successful regeneration, but more often than not, UK regional policies have been a story of high hopes and dashed expectations - dashed on the rocks of poor leadership, lack of money, or inept execution - and most often all three.
Andy used the speech to highlight the RSA's UK Urban Futures Commission, which seeks to unleash the potential of cities so they add dynamism to economies, cohesiveness to communities and redemption to the environment.
