After working with an organisational designer to review internal procedures at the RSA, we have created a much simpler leadership structure.
The Trustee Board have been busy conducting an internal review of the RSA’s working practices to make sure we bring together the different strengths within the organisation to maximise our full potential. As part of this, they have been working with an organisational designer to review internal staff structures and processes.
The result is a much simpler leadership structure, led by Matthew Taylor as our Chief Executive, Natalie Carsey as our Chief Operating Officer, and Anthony Painter as our Chief Research and Impact Officer.
The new structure not only allows for easier coordination of RSA activities, it is also much more agile and able to adapt to future challenges. In addition to the new leadership structure, the Board are also looking at how the RSA develops strategy to achieve impact, and how it designs projects that are not only strong on thought leadership, but also much better at engaging Fellows and other stakeholders to effect change.

I really applaud the principles of the RSA but I think that the organisation needs to translate the ideals of its members and researchers into practical strategies that will be accepted by others if it is to become more effective as a medium for positive change. I hope this internal review will help to support such a change.
In my view there is no value in social research for its own sake. However intellectual its ambition, it must recognise the limitations within which the decision makers around us are operating and help them to provide effective solutions to the problems that we see around us.
