Education

The World Bank recently published the World Development Report 2018 which focuses on education concentrating on four key themes:

• education’s promise;
• the need to shine a light on learning;
• how to make schools work for learners;
• how to make systems work for learning.

This Wednesday Brookings will host an event about the report.

UNESCO Working Group in Education published the Digital Skills for life and work report which explores what the implications are for the education sector in broadband-based society. Also to find more about the state of education globally read the OECD Report – Education at a glance 2017.

Economy

This recently released Brookings report on Pittsburgh rise as a Global Innovation city is - 

“the culmination of an 18-month study which examines Pittsburgh’s transformation from an industrial steel town to a global destination for innovative, technology-based economic activity.”

At this Council on Foreign Relations event the Director of the UN International Labour Organization, Guy Ryder discusses the future of work, including the impact of automation on jobs, education and skills development for emerging sectors, and the challenges presented by labour migration.

The World Bank recently published an eBook entitled "Trouble in the Making? - The Future of Manufacturing led development". It declared that "business as usual" is not enough and will not succeed given the trends in advanced technology and globalization.

Public Services

The Economic Innovation Group recently published their Distressed Communities Index report highlighting the most distressed communities in the US based on community economic wellbeing.  Richard Florida also writes on deepening inequality in America’s cities and the need for inclusive growth in this CityLab article.

This Brookings Report - Building Inclusive Cities: A framework and lessons for local leadership  is the outcome of a six month exploratory process which sought to test a framework for how metro areas could expand access to opportunity for more firms, workers, and communities. The process tested the framework amongst local leaders in three economically diverse metro areas namely Indianapolis, Nashville and San Diego.

For five years the Global Action Platform engaged with over four hundred key stakeholders to examine the food landscape in the five main areas of strategic importance:

• Food Strategy and Systems;
• Food Business Models;
• Food Science and Technology;
• Agriculture-Climate-Environment Nexus
• Food Culture and Nutrition.

Global Challenges

On the 2^nd anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, have a look at some amazing articles from the Stanford Social Innovation Review related to UN SDGs.

Lastly, a Project Syndicate article by Mahmoud Mohieldin, World Bank Group’s Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda,  argues that in spite of the global challenges the Sustainable Development Goals are still achievable.
