In the city of Leeds, more than 10,000 homes are empty - 5,500 for more than six months whilst 20,000 people are on council house waiting lists and many more live in poor quality rented accommodation
Leeds Empties is a social enterprise that supports owners of empty properties to bring them back into use. Its innovative approach is needed because of the scale of the problem – outlined above – and the nature of it – 80% of homes are privately owned – and they are spread across the city. It believes that by tackling the empty homes problem we can meet other needs and have a positive impact on the community.
HOW FELLOWS CAN HELP
There is already a developing network of supporters of Leeds Empties, and the team want to grow this during the next 12 months. Fellows could help in the future by:
- Engaging local businesses, social enterprises and other organisations with the concept of bringing more empty homes back into use.
