The power of empathy

What is the best way to ease someone’s pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuine empathic connection if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.

Dr Brené Brown is a best-selling author, speaker and research professor. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

Voice: Dr Brené Brown

Animation: Katy Davis (AKA Gobblynne)

  • As any emotionally aware person is aware, not everyone is emotionally aware. And this video is clearly aimed at helping those whose emotional awareness could use some help. Me, for instance. Thank you for the video.

  • I think connection is the starting point to recognising someone else's pain. However, along side or what could follow it's important to assist someone to employ an attitude of gratitude rather than dwell in the pain. It's diverting attention and energies to the positive while being cognizant of the pain itself, and in no way denying it.

  • All a bit obvious to the emotionally aware person, surely? Nothing new here, I'm afraid.
