Fellowship fusion: how it all started

The RSA Fellowship brings together an incredible range of talent and creative voices. At a London gathering in June 2024, Fellows Eva Pascoe and Vicki Thomas shared their unique experiences of designing sustainably in the fashion, gift and toy industries. Inspired, the RSA teamed up with Vicki, Eva and illustrator Isobel Bushell to collaborate and share their experiences in gift production and graphic design.

This collaboration marked the beginning of the RSA’s exciting merchandise journey. Artist Isobel Bushell loves working with clients who have a rich history to draw on, like St Pancras train station and cathedrals. She brings a quirky, modern twist to their stories through her illustrative approach, blending calligraphy and typography. Sustainability is also a key focus for Isobel, having worked with Heart of England food producers and the National Parks, where she integrates eco-conscious design into her work.

The result is a showstopping merchandise collection featuring branded clothing, accessories, greeting cards, and amazing images from the RSA Archive. We wanted to create products that Fellows would be proud to buy for themselves, while also making perfect gifts that embody our work, values, and rich history.

Spread joy with the RSA’s new collection

The first Christmas card

In 1843, RSA Fellow and British civil servant Sir Henry Cole made history by sending the first ever commercially produced Christmas card. Cole worked with artist John Callcott Horsley to create a card that featured a festive family scene, with a central image of a family celebrating Christmas together. The design included a charitable message, urging people to support the less fortunate during the festive season. A beloved tradition that continues today, send a heartfelt message to a loved one and spread some holiday warmth.
