Alan Higgins
Director of Public Health, Oldham Council
As Director of Public Health in Oldham, Alan Higgins has a responsibility across a full range of public health competencies from health protection through to needs assessment, evidence review, strategy development and public advocacy and leadership.
In addition to Alan’s work in Oldham, he is also Director of Public Health in Greater Manchester on Alcohol, Tuberculosis, Arts & Health and Behaviour Change. Of particular note is his leadership of the work to promote a minimum price per unit of alcohol which has gained national attention. Most recently, he has initiated discussion on the impact on health of economic inequality and polarization in Greater Manchester. He is also developing further work linking good health to good work and a broad programme on food and health, active citizenship and social business as a public health intervention.
