The task of changing an organisation is hard at the best of times.  It is hard to take the people within an organisation through change.  Is it harder when, additionally, many external stakeholders - such as clients, members, supporters - adore the organisation exactly the way it has always been?  If so, in what ways, and what can we learn from that?
A panel discussion, supported by the RSA, amongst three experienced change leaders who have brought about change at highly valued organisations: The Youth Hostels Association, UK Scouts, and the NHS.

James Blake FRSA is chief executive of the Youth Hostels Association.  His career began in the civil service, then moved into local government at St Albans city and district council where he became Chief Executive.  A keen walker and formerly a trustee of YHA James was appointed chief executive in 2017.

Matt Hyde FRSA OBE was, until recently, Chief Executive of UK Scouts.  He is now chief executive of the Lloyds Bank Foundation and formerly group chief executive of the NUS.

Sarah Perman is the Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council and has extensive experience at strategic and tactical level of integrating public health programmes across local government, the NHS and national agencies.

The discussion will be moderated by Jonathan Flowers FRSA, whose past and current portfolio of roles includes the leadership and governance of significant change.

To facilitate open dialogue this discussion will be held under the Chatham house rule.  “When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”   Registering for this event means that you agree to abide by the terms of this rule.

Taking part in RSA in-person events

To participate in the event, you will need to register for a ticket so we can make sure we have an up-to-date list of those who plan on attending. If you wish to register another attendee, this must be done separately using a different email address. This is for capacity purposes. We encourage all attendees that are ill or showing symptoms of illness to stay home and to cancel your Eventbrite ticket if you are no longer able to join the event.

At the RSA, we strive to create inclusive and supportive environments for all Fellows. We recognise that individuals may require different forms of support to fully participate in our events and activities. Therefore, we welcome and encourage Fellows to bring the support they feel is necessary, whether it be a carer, an emotional support animal, or any other form of assistance. We ask that you fill out the accessibility requirements box in your Eventbrite booking form in advance of attending one of our events to ensure that the venues can accommodate such requirements. Our aim is to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and valued, and we are committed to accommodating diverse needs to foster an inclusive community.
