John has spent 40 years working in criminal justice all over the world. He was Governor of Belmarsh and Brixton prisons, subsequently a prisons inspector and head of the government’s anti-corruption unit.
He has worked for the UN, Council of Europe, The Pentagon and a range of international jurisdictions. He contributes widely to the written and broadcast media about all aspects of justice and is Hon. Professor of Sociology at the University of Durham. John will examine the current prisons crisis and pose questions about what we want from our prisons system. He will look nationally at the issues for an incoming government but will ask what communities can do to challenge the widely held view that prisons are simply ’out of sight, out of mind'.
Fellows are invited to join us from 7pm for drinks and settle in for a conversation with the speaker after which there will be time for questions. We will finish the evening with networking to meet nearby Fellows and share ideas to contribute to our developing local programme.
Taking part in RSA in-person events
