The RSA, literacy charity Read Easy and Salisbury Library are joining forces to celebrate World Book Day on 7 March and show that people can learn to read at any age.

Our aims for the day are to raise awareness, to build links with other local community organisations and volunteers, and to help adults who have difficulty with reading and all the other social challenges that this brings.

There will be a Read Easy display in the library all day and short talks followed by questions and discussion by Neil Beagrie of the RSA, Community Library Manager Philip Tomes and Read Easy Team Leader Julia West.

Read Easy provide free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching for adults. The group has 11 people being helped with their reading aged from 25 to 79. It is thought that 11,000 people in south and east Wiltshire may need help with their reading. For one of Read Easy’s readers, Harry (not his real name), life during his school years was not easy. He was taunted because he could not read and it was only much later – he is now 51 – that he found a way to remedy this when his boss told him about Read Easy. So much has changed for Harry: shopping and texting are much easier and he is becoming more independent as he grows in confidence. He said: “I have recently been promoted at work – now I’m in charge of a team! I enjoy this.” This is testament to how learning to read can transform lives.
