Inspired by the RSA’s origins in Rawthmell’s Coffeehouse over 250 years ago, our Coffeehouse series offers Fellows across the South West the chance to meet online and share examples of innovation for social change.
Join us on a Thursday lunchtime for an informal talk by a guest presenter, followed by a Q&A and discussion.
We start at 1pm and we’ll be finished by 1.50pm promptly. Spend your lunchbreak meeting Fellows from across the region and getting new inspiration!

Event: Gender equality and progression for women artists in the UK music industry
Date: 21 March 2024
We are probably all familiar with names such as Shirley Bassey, Adele, Dua Lipa and Katherine Jenkins. Female British singers who have achieved astonishing international success. So have we achieved gender equality in UK music? In this short presentation we will explore key statistics for women in contemporary music, from the education pipeline through to both creative and business executive roles across all genres of music. We will review a few of the main barriers to entry and progression for women in music and then highlight a number of key solutions for positive action that are helping to stem the tide and in particular a not-for-profit organisation and innovative online directory of female and non-binary musicians called The F-List for Music. This work is informed by Vick’s PhD focused on women working across the UK music industry in a range of career stages and disciplines.
Vick Bain has worked in music for over 25 years; for six years as CEO of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors and is now the Past President of the Independent Society of Musicians, Founder of The F-List for Music, and researching a PhD at Queen Mary University of London.
This event is free to attend and open to all, Fellows and non-Fellows. We hope you can join us!
