Intersectional gender stereotypes are hurting you and those you love. Resulting in disordered eating, bullying, depression, and suicidal ideation among other things, these stereotypes are a public health crisis.
This virtual salon will be led by The Representation Project, a non-profit organization founded by filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The organization fights intersectional sexism using film, education, and activism.

Our moderator will be Dr. Caroline Heldman
Dr. Caroline Heldman is the Chair of Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles and the Executive Director of The Representation Project. In addition to being a political commentator for Spectrum News and CNN,. Dr. Heldman has published seven books, and has been featured in numerous documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. She co-founded the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, End Rape on Campus , Faculty Against Rape , and led the End Rape Statute of Limitations that successfully abolished the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. She is the Board President of the TEP Center,and the Chair of the Board of Alturas Institute,.

Rebecca Cooper is the Research Director for The Representation Project. Rebecca previously worked as the Senior Project Manager for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and as a State CLASS Anchor for Agenda for Children. Rebecca also served as Director of the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, as well as a researcher for the Mossville Oral History Project at Louisiana State University, T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History. Her research has been featured in the Oxford University Press Oral History Review and the Contemporary Justice Review.
Dr. Nicole Amber Haggard is an award-winning instructor, speaker and published researcher. Dr. Nicole is a faculty member in the Film, Media, and Social Justice program at Mount Saint Mary’s University and a Faculty Fellow for their Center for the Advancement of Women. She was the Director of Communications for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. In 2018, Dr. Nicole co-founded the Center for Intersectional Media and Entertainment. Dr. Nicole has been a featured expert for outlets like TedX, Variety, and SXSW. She recently completed a groundbreaking research project with Amazon Films and the See Change Institute and will be releasing her monograph Race, Sex, and Hollywood.
Skye Reed is the Social Media Manager for The Representation Project. She holds a degree in Critical Theory & Social Justice and a minor in Philosophy from Occidental College. Skye’s focus of study was on the intersection of theory and popular culture.
RSA US Virtual Salons usually occur on the fourth Thursday of each month; they aim to create open dialogue and a space for RSA US Fellows to connect across geography over the issues of our times. Join a Salon to get to know other RSA US Fellows and our interests, passions, and perspectives. Salons are supported through the moderation of a volunteer to ensure that a diversity of voices are heard. We invite all Fellows to join this discussion to deepen the ways we can connect with each other across the country!
