Prince Philip Room

Prince Philip Room

The Prince Philip Room was originally the Adelphi Room. This was once the main dining room of William Osborne’s Adelphi Tavern at no.18 Adam Street.

The room was used by the Society first as an exhibition room, then as a committee room. It was converted into a library in 1980 and structural repairs were completed in 2002.

The leasehold for this part of the House was purchased in 1957.

The gouache panels on the ceiling show ‘Pan celebrating the feast of Bacchus’, by the school of Antonio Zucchi and Angelica Kauffman. The chimneypiece was salvaged from Bowood House in Wiltshire. The room also contains a bronze bust of Prince Philip by Raphael Maklouf (1989).

The room was named in 2012 in honour of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born 1921 - died 2021).

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II and the longest-serving royal consort in history. Prince Philip was our longest-serving President from 1952 to 2011 (59 years). He was a patron and president of many organisations, including the World Wildlife Fund (now the World Wide Fund for Nature), and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for young people.

Under his direction, we first took an interest in the conservation of nature, administering the “Countryside in 1970” conferences in 1963-70, which played an important role in the emergence of the modern concept of environmentalism. Prince Philip founded the Society’s environment committee in 1971, oversaw the Society's Presidential Awards for Design Management (1964-86), and supported its campaign in 1986 to promote industry.
