In conversation with RSA Fellow Professor Penny Hay, Polly Crockett will offer insights into the experiences of independent artists as well as the bridges she creates between business students with the arts and cultural sectors.

Polly explores the lives of artists, focusing on those who may not be well known or confident in their artistic identity. Her research involves conversations with artists, allowing them to express their views on their roles, choices and the meaning of being an artist. Topics include money, value, family, education and the distinction between hobby and profession.

Polly also works with undergraduate business students, introducing them to the arts and culture sector, often overlooked by new graduates. She encourages students to explore their creativity and consider how it can enhance their careers. She runs the master’s level Arts Management program and examines how the arts can collaborate with various businesses to foster a sustainable future. Polly will present a case study on this at the AAAE conference in America in May.

Currently, Polly is analysing data for her PhD and has recently launched an Instagram profile @artistssay, to share snippets of conversations with artists, who are eager to be heard despite their nervousness and uncertainty of their life as an artist.

She has worked within the Arts Industry for over 30 years, starting her career as a dancer. Her professional career has taken her through many changes, which became the fuel for her research.
